Awards for Australia's most efficient airconditioner
The awards for the most efficient single phase and 3 phase airconditioners
registered on the government's energy rating website on 1 July 2009 will
be presented at the AREMA Awards night dinner on 12 November 2009.
The Hon Peter Garrett AM MP, Minister for the Environment, Heritage and
the Arts will give the keynote address at the dinner.

The new regulations were
gazetted on 19 Feb 09 and will be enforced through building
regulations. They apply to installations inspected after 1 Jul 09.
AREMA opposed the initiative for a number of reasons.

Carbon
Pollution Reduction Scheme (CPRS) to include refrigerant gases
Most airconditioners use HFC
refrigerant gases which do not damage the ozone layer but which have a
high global warming potential (GWP). Atmospheric release of these
gases is illegal. The CPRS hopes to create an additional incentive
to prevent accidental release by substantially increasing the price of the
gas when it is first imported.
AREMA has asked to
government to follow the EU's lead in controlling emissions of these
synthetic greenhouse gases through end use controls rather than by substantially
increasing the price of airconditioners and refrigeration equipment.
End use controls have worked well in Australia to almost eliminate
emissions of ozone depleting refrigerant gases.

Energy efficiency
and commercial refrigeration
AREMA's commercial
refrigeration members have been working with the government to improve
energy efficiency in the sector. The 10 year Strategy will be
